Souls in the Dark
On the first day, man was granted a soul.... On the second day upon Earth was planted... a soul-devouring demon...
The Old One is the most ancient of evils upon Earth, placed there upon the second day after creation. It is malice incarnate, and feeds upon man’s greatest gift-souls. Almost all truly evil beings have been fashioned by the Old One in some form or another; it is the bane of both Light and Dark, the source of the colorless fog.
In ages past, the world learned from the Old One’s agents the soul arts, and the misuse of these magics opened the earth to invasion by the fog. The fog spread, gradually and slowly suffocating life until a band of men went forth and eradicated both every demon serving the Old One, and the soul arts from even the annals of history. The group sealed the Old One with a holy site that came to be called the Nexus, and locked the Nexus with six Archstones, each entrusted to rulers they deemed wise, and transformed themselves into half-living constructs called Monumentals to safegard the Nexus and the Old One. Half the world was lost, erased by the fog, yet the world continued as though nothing had happened until the time of Old King Allant of Boletaria.
Old King Allant became depressed and cynical in his later years to the point that he became omnicidal. During his reign, the last remaining Monumental revived the soul arts and Allant discovered their connection to the Old One. Aiming to end all life, he intentionally spread the arts until indeed, the colorless fog engulfed Boletaria and began to spread across the world again. Years passed with many glory-seeking warriors and magicians attempting to brave the fog, all falling to the demons, until a nameless knight died and his soul became trapped by the Nexus. He alone managed to slay every last demon in the fog and, with the help of a mysterious ‘maiden in black’, lulled the Old One back to slumber.
A mage the nameless knight saved during this time, Sage Freke the Visionary continued and greatly developed the soul arts and discovered a means to use sorceries without the use of demon’s souls.
