Souls in the Dark
Gwyn, the First Lord
The most powerful of the primeval Lords, Lord of Sunlight, and later, Lord of Cinders
Gwyn was one of the four beings that found the souls of Lords in the First Flame, and through it became the Lord of Sunlight, the spirit of the sun itself. Using the power the souls granted, he, along with the other ancient Lords, challenged the everlasting dragons. Followed by his faithful knights, he, alongside the other Lords, challenged and defeated the dragons in order to craft the world as they saw fit.
Gwyn’s used great lightning bolts in that time, using them to tear apart the dragon’s scales.
After the gods defeated the dragons and beginning the Age of Fire, Gwyn gave a piece of his soul to Seath, the Scaleless, a pale, scaleless dragon that betrayed the dragons and aided the Lords, and granted him a dukedom. He then sired the first of the gods and created Anor Londo, the city of the gods in his birthplace, a land named Lordran.
Over time, man came to be, and Gwyn, recognizing their potential, gifted another piece of his soul to four of their kings who ruled over New Londo, a human city in Lordran, and befriended the Primordial Serpent Frampt, who promised to find the Chosen Undead that would succeed Gwyn and renew the Age of Fire when the time came.
Eventually, it came to Gwyn’s attention that the Fires that fueled the gods’ power were waning, and would soon die, leaving only the power of the cold Dark. The other Lords had all either become mad or wicked; the four kings had defected to the Dark and New Londo had become a den of Dark-twisted mortals and had to be sealed away by being flooded; even the gods were growing weak and vain. In an attempt to thwart this, he sacrificed his soul to link the fires, enlivening them with his power, and thus became the Lord of Cinder, never to leave the Kiln of the First Flame again. It was not until the heir of the overlooked Furtive Pygmy, an undead knight who had been locked away in an undead asylum, made a pilgrimage to Lordran, was Gwyn ever seen again. The knight had inherited the soul of the Furtive Pygmy, the Dark Soul, and was preordained to become the Fourth Lord, the Dark Lord, by killing Lord Gwyn, claiming his soul, and ending the Age of Fire and ushering in the Age of Dark.
